THE PUBLIC LIBRARIES
The National Library, through its Public Libraries Division, supervises
the following library levels: regional, district, provincial, city, municipal
and barangay libraries. The Library, in fact, faces a great challenge where
Republic Act No. 7743 of June 17, 1994 was passed establishing congressional,
district, city and municipal libraries and barangay centers.
As a result, the Library receives requests from local government units
applying for the establishment and/or affiliation of their library with
The National Library. Also, the Library provides these public libraries
with books and government publications, including the training of public
library staff on various aspects of librarianship.
To reach out to areas where a permanent library has not been established,
the Library sent out bookmobiles to bring library services up to the barangay
level. A joint undertaking of the Library and the local government where
the bookmobile will operate, the first bookmobile served the rural areas
of Quezon Province. Since then, 14 bookmobiles have been provided to different
rural areas of the country, such as:
